Decals
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:50:37 PM »

Do bikes usually have the decals over or under the clear coat? Just wondering, I have decals coming for my H*nda that I need to put on. I'm going to be painting it the original black, with the original decals. Trying to stock-ify it a bit before I sell it. I figure something like that the more stock it is the more its worth. I'm doing all the regular maintenance I can think of too. I have about $1500 into it now, trying to get more than that back off it.

Paint, decal, clear - the last restored Z1 tank I saw with a reproductions decals kit on it.

Cool, thanks. Gotta get this one out the door. Taking up space and it'll get me money I can use to buy a good TIG.

What vintage are you talking here Tyler?
Can't remember which Honda you have.
Some of these new bikes have the decals on top, as I've seen many riders remove some of them.

That scheme always reminds me of the CB400N (Hawk in USA). And not in a particularly good way. The silver one is a little better IMO and the one used by Spencer

To me, the best scheme for these bikes by far is this

Best looking colour, design, wheels - everything.

I owned a CB1100F and it's not a patch on the original when it comes to look - again my personal view

Sorry for getting carried away. Please make sure you follow your own taste without letting mine influence you  ;)

BTW, did you get the US or Euro version of the Bol'dOrs in Canada?

Whats a Bol'dOrs? I think the CB is the US version, just from the foot pegs.

I'm not really going for my own tastes other than a preference of black over silver. Just staying true to the year, and put it back to as close to stock as I can, to lure potential buyers.

It was a designation for the 900, the 1100 was named Super Bol d'Or. Don't think they used it for the 750. US versions had forward pegs and tall handlebars, Euro versions had low bars and rearsets.

USA got the 900 in 1981, but with the new shock absorbers and rubber mounted engine first seen in Europe for 1982.

We also had the F2 version of all 3 sizes

We also had this version of the 1100, which was the one I actually had only mine were blue

It had the fairing from the CBX550F2 together with a unique spoiler.

You guys always get more interesting bikes. For some reason everyone in Europe/Japan thinks that Americans dont like interesting things. When I was at VW in Wolfsburg, a friend of mine who worked in marketing told me that a quote from a senior VW exec, in response to a question about the Amarok going to America, was, "there isn't a market in America for small trucks." I found that laughable.

There is also the case of wanting what you don't get. We didn't get the NT650 Hawk GT, for instance. Or the GS300. Or the VT500FR Ascot. Or the Spectre series. There have been others, but these dropped into my head first. The CB750F was only released here after lots of crying, just as the 900F only came to USA after they cried they only got the 750. When USA got the VF1000R they had cried about, they celebrated by not buying it. Same with the TDM850 and plenty others. However, IIRC the 550 class sold well in America cirka 1980, but Honda never sold the CBX550 there to compete with the GS550, GPz550 and Seca 550 for whatever reason, despite the bike usually beating the competition in European tests.

Not a great pic but this is what the Canadian version for the 900F looked like... this is a original un-restored 1981 model.

We Canuckistanians got the NT650 and the CBX550 but they only sold in modest numbers. Both were withdrawn after 2 model years, IIRC.
