the gs1100 arm is roughly 1.5" over on a stock 900/1000,so im gonna venture a guess its going to be 3" over on your 650.
you can use the stock pivot bolt from your 650,youll need either gs1100 shocks or honda goldwing style clevis shocks.
see if you can get the gs1100 rear axle and adjusters to go with it.
the gs rear axle is a bigger diameter than the kz650 so a bearing swap will be in order, wheel spacers will depend on wheel used .
youll also need to decide what rear brakes youre going to use  ;)

Thanks wireman, my buddy has a kz1000 arm and it's the same length as the 650 arm, but much thicker scantlings, heavier and stronger. I saw a thread on this site that said the 650 axle is 17mm and the GS axle is 20mm same as the 1000 axle. I think i will try and find a 1000 axle and spacers and use the 650 wheel and brake setup if possible. Thanks for the input. Jimbo.

the kz 1000 axle wont be wide enough,im pretty sure kz1000 swingarm is longer than 650  ;)

Wireman, thanks again. I know the lengths are the same because, my buddy pulled his CSR 1000 swingarm off so he could fit a Ninja 1000 arm on with twin shocks{ it is quite cool}, any ways i took the stock 1000 arm thinking it would be a good swap, rear disc set up and all, and found the lengths the same! He ended up wanting to convert his bike back to stock and took the arm back! You may be right about the axle length, I will measure. I thought this might be a good winter upgrade, Aluminum, cool looking and all and stronger, but this may be more hastle than its worth. The swingarm is only 50 bucks, I think I may just buy it and try to figure out the bearings and spacers to use the stock rear wheel. Jimbo

Hey fellas,
I went ahead and bought that GS1100 swing arm. I got the axle, adjusters, spacers , shocks and swingarm shaft all for 50 bucks ! Now I'm setting up for a winter project. I want to use the stock 650 laced wheel with the drum brake hub set up. Wireman clued me in on a few issues I will have including the fact that the axle is 20mm and the 650 axle is only 16mm. so a bearing swap at least is in order. Spacers to make this work? any suggestions? I was thinking of buying that CD ROM package from the old kaw man , there is a swingarm section in it for old Kaw's. Wireman the GS arm is about 2 inches longer than the stock 650 arm, and the drum brake arm looks like it might be in the way. Thanks boys. Jimbo

P.S I also went to Z1 enterprises and bought a cool Kerker lawson replica pipe and new KV green coils with trick wires. pix soon

Jimbo, you rascal, what are you turning your 650 into ??? ;) LOL

BTW, my buddy and I will be out your way in August again....sailing over to the Island on the morning of the 8th.....Horseshoe to Departure and then return the same way on the 10th or so. Keep an eye out for 2 Bandits (1998 and 2006) loaded to the gunwales with gear...both are maroon in colour. :D   Sorry but the 650 is just not suited for "rapid transit camping". :( ;)
Maybe NEXT year we'll travel in a more leisurely fashion aboard our older bikes.

H2Rick, Make sure you call 250-729-5689. Bodingtons on me! The old KZ will be on the road and I'd love to hook up with you boys if your overnighting in Nanaimo. I'm not going to get too wild with the KZ, I will only do this swingarm swap if it's a clean looking proper swap. Polished up it should look nice.Take care and I hope to here from you. Jumbo.

have you thought about  just picking a wire rear wheel with a disc brake from a 77-78 kz1000,or maybe a 750 twin?
might save you some headaches for mounting a rear brake, pretty simple to make a mounting bracket for master cylinder  ;)

Wireman, you may be right. I don't think the 650 drum set up on the laced rim is going to work with this swap. I have looked all over KZ rider site and never found a 650 that did this swap. The problem is the brake backing plate , I don't believe there is a 20mm bushing for this available and the 900 part is mega bucks.I'm starting to loose interest in this, and it's too bad . OMARs flat track site has cheap clevis redwing shocks too. If I can find someone who has done a 650 with this set up,I'm on it. Thanks Jimbo. P.S. H2Rick, look foreward to hearing from you.

OK, I officially give up on the swingarm swap. My bike is too nice to modify it that way. I will save the swingarm for a new project,as soon as I can find a suitable bike. In the mean time I ordered a set of REDWING shocks from OMARS. He has cool stuff for XS 650 Yamahas, the shocks are eye to eye ,13 3/8" long with progressive suspension springs.Only 149.00. When i was taking off my wheels and getting the new bridgestones put on, I decided this bike needs to stay relatively stock. Also as soon as I find out the OD of the stock fork springs, I'm getting a set of those SONIC springs I was reading about on this site. Kerker goes on next week and the coils. Can't wait. Jimbo

Where did you pick the Kerker up from Jimbo - they do not seem to be available over here. I know shipping could be a killer to get one sent here, but we have a very limited choice on zorsts

1977 Z650 C1 that came with a crazy wiring mess, multiple bodges and no airbox, but it's largely sorted now after LOTS of work and stoopid amounts of money, although the spending goes on..and on..and on ...and...well, ya know.

Z1 enterprizes, very pricey at 500.00, but I'm tired of blown baffles and rattle trap mounting, I want a quality exhaust that will last and perform. The new kerker is that Eddie Lawson replica style, looks awsome, i was surprised to see a tag on it saying made by supertrap? they must have bought out kerker.Drain plug access and center stand clearance , Its the best pipe available IMO.
