The 404 is Dunlop's entry-level tire bias ply tire, IIRC.
They are not particularly sticky at all.....but on the plus side, they wear like iron. :D
The 501 is their more modern bias ply tire which is supposed to compete with the likes of the BT45's. A similar tire is the Michelin Activ. Both the 501 and the Activ have more "modern" tread patterns than the BT45.

130 for the 79' D where the Service Sanual specs a MT90-16. Any additional thoughts on this discrepancy?

MT90-16 and 130/90-16 all same same. The MT is the old style alpha-numeric designation that hasn't been used since, oh, about the late 80's - early 90's.

EDIT: I should have qualified the above a bit......
The old style alpha-numeric designation hasn't been used since the late 80's - early 90's by anyone.....except HD. They still insist on using the old designators on their tires. :doubletake: I think they secretly believe that the whole metric system is some kind of European-Oriental plot to subvert the "American Way". Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge again Rick.

I now have a spare set of rims (89' KZ750h scrap/parts) and will give more serious consideration to the tires I run, when it's needed and I have the $$$.

So I did end up puttin a set of BT45's on my ride. The set of spitfires was getting a bit long in the tooth!  I removed a 110/100/19 :doubletake: front and a 130/90/18 :iconstupid: rear after close to 10 years of use :doubletake: the front had a flat spot and the rear was showing cords  :P  I installed V rated 100/90/19 front and 130/80/18 rear tires. I guess i could've went with the 120/90 rear , maybye next time.... First impressions?  These were definately worth it!! That rear tire must have 1/4 an inch of tred depth!at least! And the handeling is great. After I scrubbed them in , i did a favorite road consisting of 100mph sweepers and i just stuck like glue!!
If you need tires , just buy bridgestone Battalax BT45's V rated.

I have Shinko SR712 H rated in 110/90-19 front and 120/90-18 rear. I got conflicting conversions on tire size, so that's how I wound up with 110/90 on front. Fits, but looks too big.

I have put 1000 miles on them, but no wet weather riding. My bike had the original dry rotted tires when I got it, so I have no comparison. They seem to wear well and stick pretty good. The front tire is out of round, and it's irritating at about 40mph.

I work at a auto tire shop, and no one seems to make a round car tire. I would have thought bike tires would be better. I have rotated the tire on the rim and it didn't help, the rim is true, and the bead is fully seated. Next time I will spend a little more for a decent brand.

Not sure if I posted on this but I have new GT 501 Dunlop's
100/90/19 and 130/80/18 on my bike and so far
as an all round tire they seem ok.
Better then the 404's I took off.

I learned last weekend that at about
140-150 degree track temp you can spin one
pass the grand stand's and still go 12.26 at 103 mph on one.

I always ran a 120/90 rear, back in the 80's. I have a 120/90 x 18 on now too.

It still looks incredibly spindly parked next to my Street Triple :D but no problems with handling or anything
What tyres you running Charlie ? been checking some of the UK sites and availabity sems a bit limited, Maxxis do the sizes req but dont know much about em

Stupid question maybe but has anyone run a wider front tyre, a 110 perhaps ?

Wider tyres do no good on the stock rims. You can see here what sizes fits http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/roadrider The standard 650s have a 1.85-19 front and 2.15 rear rim. Some tyres are made to fit narrower rims than these listed, but not by a lot. A wider front, BTW, will make steering heavier and slower, all things else being equal.

BTW; I run Heidenau K34 Racing 3.35-19 up front and Cheng Shin C199 4.25 rear on my bike because that's what it came with. They grip surprisingly well and wear very well indeed. I know that grip will vary with riding style, bike and preferences, but I get more feedback and at least as much grip from these as I do from BT45s. Metzeler ME77 grips better and offer a smoother ride than the cheap stuff I use now, but they last just 1/3 as long and cost more to buy.

There will always be an optimum recommended tire for any given rim, and fitting a bigger tire because you think you'll have more rubber on the road can often mean a trade-off in handling, so unless it's a highly recommended change that improves the handling and road holding, it's not a good idea.

This should be changed from "fitting a bigger tire............can often mean....."
to ".......will ALWAYS mean.......". ;)
